Community Engagement

Why It Matters

To Lilly:

Our local engagement strengthens trust with communities where we live and work and reinforces Lilly as an employer of choice, both where we have deep roots and in new locations as we expand our footprint. By aligning our time, talent, and resources with community‑identified priorities, we build credibility and reinforce Lilly’s role as a responsible and trusted neighbor.

To the World:

Communities continue to face complex challenges related to health, education, and economic opportunity. Lilly’s community engagement focuses on areas where we can contribute distinctive value — advancing health, strengthening education and workforce readiness, and fostering civic vitality. Through collaboration with community organizations, we aim to support lasting solutions that expand access and opportunity while respecting local expertise and leadership.

Approach

As Lilly marks 150 years, we honor a legacy that has always extended beyond our medicines to the communities where we live, work, and grow together. Our community engagement approach is guided by principles that emphasize trust, collaboration, and shared impact. We engage communities as equals, align our actions with Lilly’s purpose and values, and focus our resources where they can meaningfully expand access to education, health and economic mobility. Our work prioritizes long‑term relationships over one‑time activities, grounded in continuous learning and lasting impact.

In practice, this means fostering active employee volunteerism and philanthropy, deepening company connections with civic groups and local leaders, and collaborating on projects that make life better for people. We work alongside communities to co‑create solutions that respond to local needs while advancing health, opportunity, and education.

Volunteering, Supporting, Giving

Volunteering

Employee volunteerism remains a cornerstone of Lilly’s community impact and culture. We actively encourage and support our employees in giving their time, and we offer a range of opportunities to engage with and give back to the communities around us.

Global Day of Service is our most recognized and widely participated volunteer initiative. Since 2007, thousands of Lilly employees around the world have dedicated time each year to hands-on, team-based service in their communities focused on strengthening health, education, and community improvement to help people live and thrive.

Connecting Hearts at Home is a community engagement and employee volunteer program designed to strengthen relationships between Lilly employees and the communities surrounding our U.S. sites. The program brings employees together to support locally identified community needs through purpose‑driven projects developed with nonprofit organizations, schools, and community groups. By aligning projects with community-defined priorities, the program moves beyond one-time events toward sustained, place-based engagement that strengthens community trust, supports nonprofit capacity, and deepens employees' connection to our purpose while also fostering employee pride, leadership development, and engagement.

Supporting Communities

Lilly supports nonprofit organizations, civic institutions, and community-led initiatives that advance health, education, and community vitality through community-based memberships and sponsorships. These contributions enhance community capacity, build trust, and contribute to long‑term social impact aligned with our community engagement approach.

Our community support is designed to strengthen relationships and deliver meaningful, place‑based impact. Funding decisions are informed by community landscape analyses and aligned with our guiding principles, focused on contributions that address documented community needs, reflect our purpose and values, and offer measurable impact.

Giving

The company orchestrates employee giving programs designed to help employees support the causes and communities that matter to them. Through a combination of year‑round and special giving opportunities, including our annual United Way Campaign and other enterprise-wide initiatives, employees can donate to causes they care about.

In 2024, we introduced a new expression of our approach to community giving through Milestones Into Meaning™. Building off our broader relationship with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic teams, through the program, for every Team USA medal and record achieved during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Lilly donated directly to U.S. nonprofit organizations focused on charitable efforts to expand healthcare access and strengthen community health.

Together, these volunteering, supporting and giving programs reflect Lilly's long-standing commitment to making life better — for employees, for nonprofits, and for the communities we call home.

Extending Our Impact

We extend our community impact reach through the Lilly Grant Office (LGO). The LGO provides financial support to projects that promote excellence in patient care and provide valuable information to the medical and patient advocacy communities.

Separately, Lilly also provides charitable donations to the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation (Lilly Foundation). Established in 1968, the Lilly Foundation is a separate tax-exempt organization that provides support to other qualifying tax-exempt organizations.

Progress

In 2025, our community engagement efforts continued to grow in both participation and reach, reflecting the depth of our employees' connection to the communities around them.

Through Global Day of Service, employees logged more than 86,000 volunteer hours, sustaining the momentum of an initiative that has mobilized thousands of employees worldwide each year since 2007. Beyond volunteering, Lilly made donations to a range of nonprofit organizations working to improve communities in the areas of arts, culture, health, and STEM education.

Our giving programs saw strong employee participation as well. Lilly employees and retirees contributed nearly $7.4 million to United Way chapters across the United States, when combined with a separately provided match from the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation (Lilly Foundation). These contributions help United Way address complex societal challenges in health, economic advancement, and education in resource-limited communities.

In 2025, Lilly donated $29.7 million to the Lilly Foundation in support of its philanthropic objectives. The Lilly Foundation's website provides further information on its charitable use of these funds.

What's Next

Looking ahead, Lilly plans to expand engagement to communities surrounding our new sites, starting by listening to local needs and building relationships grounded in trust. We seek to engage communities early, before our sites are even operational and look to understand local priorities as we align our efforts.

To support this expansion, we are focused on strengthening infrastructure, processes, and systems to enable consistency and scale. Near‑term priorities include piloting and expanding signature programs such as Connecting Hearts at Home, increasing employee participation through decentralized volunteer models, and enhancing systems to track impact.

We also look to build on momentum of our giving programs and continue to grow employee participation across our core campaigns.
