Why It Matters
To Lilly:
We respond to disasters because we believe access to essential medicines should never be interrupted—especially when people are most vulnerable. We go beyond our business and provide our workforce with opportunities to engage with the community to meet the needs that arise during crises. Supporting the continuity of care in these moments reflects our values and the trust patients place in us.
To the World:
In the face of disaster, sustaining access to healthcare is critical to protecting lives and rebuilding stability. When life is disrupted, the ability to continue treatment offers more than medical care—it offers dignity, hope, and a path to recovery.
Approach
Disasters can change lives instantly. Lilly works with leading humanitarian and disaster relief organizations to provide medicines and support recovery efforts across a number of initiatives.
Disaster Preparedness
Since 2009, we have worked with Direct Relief to supply insulin for Hurricane Prep Packs. These packs are pre-positioned at health centers in hurricane zones across the U.S., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. We also support Direct Relief's Global Strategic Emergency Stockpile initiative by providing insulin pre-positioned at Direct Relief's warehouse, to enable rapid disaster response.
Disaster Relief Product Support
Following a disaster, we may also donate medicines at the request of relief organizations including Americares, Direct Relief and Project HOPE. These organizations work closely with clinics and hospitals to rapidly assess needs and prioritize patient support.
Partnership for Quality Medical Donations
We are a charter member of Partnership for Quality Medical Donations, a global organization uniting medical-product companies and humanitarian organizations to promote sustainable access to quality health care in underserved communities during crises.
Other Initiatives
Patients may also seek support through the Lilly Diabetes Solution Center, a resource that provides assistance to people in the U.S. with urgent diabetes care needs, including those affected by disasters, and those who need help affording their insulin.
Additionally, financial gifts made by employees and separately matched by the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation (Lilly Foundation) are donated to leading relief organizations, such as the American Red Cross and the World Central Kitchen, to support disaster response and recovery following severe disasters.
