We are committed to managing waste responsibly as part of our broader environmental stewardship. As our operations grow, we’re focused on minimizing waste sent to landfill, increasing recycling and designing more sustainable products and packaging. By embedding circular economy principles into our processes, we aim to reduce our environmental footprint while continuing to deliver innovative medicines to patients around the world.
To the World
Waste from industrial activity, especially plastic and hazardous materials, contributes to pollution, climate change and pressure on natural resources. Responsible waste management helps protect ecosystems, conserves resources, and keeps these materials out of the environment and out of landfills. For the pharmaceutical sector, where packaging and process materials are unavoidable, source reduction and circular practices are how we limit that impact.
Approach
The most effective way to reduce waste is to not create it in the first place. We are committed to green chemistry and endeavor to reduce waste at the source, including minimizing the use of materials that can often become hazardous waste at the end of the manufacturing process. Additionally, plastic waste is a particular focus given its global impact.
Our waste strategy follows a hierarchy that prioritizes eliminating waste (reduce), followed by reuse, recycling and consuming our waste for energy.
Integrating Sustainability into Our Product and Packaging Design Processes
To support our 2030 waste goals, we continue to build on efforts to incorporate sustainability into the life cycle of our products, delivery devices and packaging, with waste reduction in mind. Our goal is to integrate sustainability-focused design principles into future product and packaging design processes, while identifying and evaluating opportunities to enhance our current portfolio, including labeling in some markets that will better inform the patient on disposal. We aspire to develop products that are:
Inclusive: We strive to design intuitive experiences that are inclusive of the unique capabilities and changing conditions of people around the world and that meet their diverse abilities and needs.
Trustworthy: We demonstrate care and compassion for people and aim to create devices and packaging that are consistent, reliable and easy to learn and use across all touchpoints.
Sustainable: We strive to design our therapies, devices, packaging and experiences for longevity and minimal environmental impact.
We aim to make our products more sustainable without sacrificing safety, regulatory requirements, user experience or patient outcomes. We strive to position our products at the top of our “reduce, reuse, recycle” waste hierarchy, and design for recyclability while also seeking to reduce medical waste and electronic waste. We are investing in research to identify renewable/bio-based materials to try to make our future packaging and devices more sustainable. We are also exploring collaborations and partnerships with our key materials suppliers to evaluate the feasibility of improving the sustainability of existing devices.
We have developed a Design for Sustainability Guidebook to support the design of our next generation of delivery devices to meet our environmental goals. The guidebook is used internally to provide insights into sustainability approaches in device and secondary packaging design, materials and recycling. It aims to increase knowledge in this space and explore best practices when designing our devices and packaging in a regulated environment.
Progress
Progress in 2025 spans three goals that together address how we generate, manage and design out waste: keeping routine operational waste out of landfill, repurposing plastic waste for beneficial use, and embedding sustainability-focused design into our products and packaging. The metrics and highlights that follow report progress against each of our 2030 waste goals.
Goal: Zero waste to landfill from routine operations
In 2025, we generated 148,000 metric tonnes of waste. Also, in 2025, 25 of 37 in-scope facilities achieved the zero-landfill target, resulting in 0.7% of our waste from routine operations being sent to landfill. The number of our facilities reaching the zero-landfill target increased and there was an overall decrease from 2024 in the aggregate percentage of routine operational waste being sent to landfill.
Goal: 100% of plastic waste repurposed for beneficial use, with at least 90% recycled or reused
We were able to repurpose 96% of our plastic waste for beneficial use (reuse/recycle/waste-to-energy) in 2025, primarily driven by the recycling of plastics from our manufacturing processes and incoming packaging material. Of our total plastic waste, approximately 83.7% was recycled or reused, a decrease compared to 2024 primarily due to ramp up of operations at newer sites.
While we are close to achieving our established plastic waste goals, we anticipate that it will take significant efforts – such as new technologies and innovative external capacity – to achieve 100% beneficial use and at least 90% reused or recycled plastic waste.
In 2025, we implemented closed-loop recycling of plastic material associated with device component trays used in our Indianapolis Device and Packaging manufacturing site. In partnership with our upstream supplier, we are able to return the trays which can be made into new trays, reducing the amount of virgin plastic required and lowering our carbon footprint, while saving money for the business.
Goal: Integrating sustainability-focused design principles into product and packaging design processes
We continue to implement both the current and long-term initiatives on our product and packaging sustainability roadmap. Highlights from 2025 include:
Embedding sustainability criteria into new device design programs: Applied the Design for Sustainability Playbook and Implementation Toolkit to next-generation multi-dose and reusable device programs, formally integrating recyclability, renewable materials assessment and end-of-life considerations into upstream design decisions.
Adopting mono-material design as a standard approach for new disposable devices: New disposable device platforms are being designed around compatible, single-family plastic systems to simplify end-of-life disassembly and improve recyclability without compromising device performance or patient safety.
Integrating LCA data into design decision-making: LCAs across multiple device platforms provide program teams with data to inform material selection and design decisions during development.
